INTRODUCTION TO THE SECOND EDITION
If the concept of tawhid is central to Islam and everything Islamic,
it is because of its centrality to existence and everything that exists. Belief
in the Divine Principle, the transcendent Allah, brings with it the
understanding that all creation is subservient to Him. With this rela-
tionship at the core of all matters, all things and all creatures are thus
interrelated, at least at the most basic level. But in most cases that is
only the beginning. Indeed, Islamic science, whether religious, moral,
or natural is essentially a quest to discover the order underlying the
variegated world of multiplicity.
The work of al Shahid, Dr. Ismail Raji al Faniqi on the subject of
tawhid affords the reader not only a look at the axial doctrine of Islam,
but further allows the reader to understand that doctrine from a number
of different perspectives. In the endeavor to explain the simple truths
of the doctrine of unity, Dr. Al Fariqi touches upon a broad spectrum
of subjects, drawing into his discussions elements from history, com-
parative religion, anthropology, philosophy, ethics, epistemology, ar-
chacology, and other disciplines. As such, his concept of tawhid is rich
in the depth of its erudition, abundant in its perceptions. Indeed, it is
perhaps this work more than any other that reflects the profound and
original thought of Dr. al Fariqi.
The International Institue of Islamic Thought is proud to present the
reader with a completely new edition of this important contribution to
the contemporary Islamic library. In this edition, great care has been
taken to ensure the integrity of the original text. Moreover, a glossary
of foreign terms has been added and the index has been significantly
expanded. Another important feature is that all of the Quranic verses
quoted in the text appear in the footnotes in the orginal Arabic. In short,
no effort has been spared to ensure the quality of this edition.
