In writing this book, all the authors were blessed with sharing an improved
sisterhood relationship with each other. May Allah extend His kind blessings
upon all our readers and bring us all together under His love and protection.
We dedicate this book to Allah and Allah alone. Insha’Allah, He will
bless the reader with the understanding and openness to bridge any gaps
between culture, religions, expericnce, and background.
Before providing a context in which to understand the sisters’ stories,
three basic bits of housekeeping need to be accomplished.
Firstly, the reader will find a number of Arabic terms sprinkled through-
out this book. These Arabic words cither have become a normal part of
the language of most Muslims, or have no simple equivalent in English. For
the ease of the reader, we have tried to transliterate these Arabic words in a
consistent manner into English letters across this book’s individual chapters.
Further, following the first occurrence of each Arabic term, we have given
an English definition within the text. Moreover, we have listed all of these
Arabic terms and their English definitions in a glossary at the end of this
book.
Secondly, it is customary for Muslims to use certain phrases after men-
tioning Allah, one of the prophets recognized by Islam, and the Sahabah
(companions) of Prophet Muhammad. For example, after mentioning Allah,
it is customary to use the phrase Subhanna Wa Ta’ala (glorified and exalted
is He). After mentioning the name of a prophet, a Muslim gypically says
Salla Allah ‘Alayhi Wa Salam (the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
or simply, peace be upon him). After saying the name of a Sahabi, a
Muslim usually says Redhi Allaho Anho (may Allah accept him). The use of
such phrases by Muslims is an expression of honor and respect. However,
as most non-Muslim readers find that the repetitious use of such phrases
is disruptive to their case of reading and comprehension, the editors have
