The predicament of modern man may be summed up in a
few words: we have learned to fly in the skies like birds and to
swim in the oceans like fish, but we have yet to learn to live on
the earth as good human beings. Man’s search to learn to live
as a good human being poses the greatest challenge for mankind
in the new millennium. The 20th century was remarkable for
its achievements in the fields of science, technology and
development. Yet it was also the most violent century of human
history, annihilating over 100 million human beings in two
world wars and over two hundred localized conflicts. Despite
two centuries of unprecedented economic development, over
40% of the human race lives in poverty and some 20% in abject
poverty, while 87% of the world’s GDP (Gross Domestic
Product) is owned and controlled by twenty countries, with
only 18% of the world’s population. [s the 21st century going
to be any better? This question prompts no easy answer.
Easy answers could be deceptive. However, as giving up the
search would inevitably lead to nihilism and doom, looking
for alternatives is the only real option. Stories of people who
have chosen to engage in such a quest abound, but they often
succeed only in providing a partial consolation to what
otherwise appears as a dismal horizon. Among those who have
undertaken this search assiduously and have been able to see
some light beyond the tunnel are two German intellectuals.
